Civil Union Act Marriages for heterosexual and same sex partners
It has come to the attention of SAPRA that a number of Home Affairs officials across the country are still refusing to register heterosexual marriages performed under the Civil Union Act by marriage officers appointed by SAPRA.
For some reason said officials believe that only same-sex couples may be married under the Civil Union Act. This is not true!
According to the Civil Union Act, both same-sex and heterosexual marriages are permitted under this Act.
Failure to register these legally performed marriages constitutes gross negligence on the part of ill-informed Home Affairs officials.
This Alliance will be lodging a formal request for investigation with the Minister of Home Affairs in order to have officials who refuse to register said marriages removed from their posts without further delay.
